Edwardian Quarry Tiled Floor Renovation Bishops Cleave

Removing Old Carpet Glue from Quarry Tiles with Tile Doctor Remove and Go in Bishops Cleave Gloucester

This client from Bishops Cleeve which is just north of Cheltenham contacted Tile Doctor about the cleaning of an old Quarry tiled floor. The owner had some renovation work done to the property and discovered the quarry tiles under carpet in their hallway.

I paid a visit to the property to survey the floor and quote for its renovation. The house was Edwardian, so it is possible the tiles were original, either way they were in good structural condition having been protected by the carpet. The tiles were heavily stained however and now ingrained with dirt and stained with paint from decorating and old adhesive from the carpet. However, I was confident they would respond well to cleaning.

Having measured up I worked out the quantities of products needed to restore the floor and worked out a detailed quote for the work. That was accepted and a date set for the work to start which would take two days, one to clean and one to seal.

Cleaning a Quarry Tiled Hallway

On the first day work started by covering up skirting boards and walls with plastic sheeting to protect from splashing. Then working in sections, a strong dilution of Tile Doctor Remove and Go was sprayed onto the floor and left to soak in for ten minutes which gives it time to break down the dirt and contaminates.

Next using a black pad fitted to a rotary buffing machine the floor was scrubbed thoroughly to release the soiling from the floor. Some of the areas were difficult to reach with the pad so these were hand scrubbed using more Tile Doctor Remove and Go. This process released dirt and staining from the quarry tiles turning the cleaning solution black and this was then extracted using a wet vacuum.

After inspecting the floor, the grout lines and tile edges were hand scrubbed using more Tile Doctor Remove and Go and then the floor rinsed with water and extracted again with the wet vacuum. The floor was then rinsed again with water to remove any trace of cleaning product and then dried as much as possible using the wet vacuum. This process was repeated across the floor until all the areas had been deep cleaned.

Sealing a Quarry Tiled Hallway

The floor was left to dry off for two days and when I returned you could see a massive difference to tiles which had now regained their characteristic red colour. After checking the floor was dry with a damp meter, I was then able to seal the floor using four coats of Tile Doctor Colour Grow. This is an impregnator that soaks into the pores of the tile protecting it from within and improving colour. The sealer will ensure dirt remains on the surface where it can be easily cleaned away.

Once complete the floor was transformed and given its age it’s remarkable how well it came up, certainly my client was very pleased with the finish. Before leaving we discussed on-going care, and I recommended the use of Tile Doctor Neutral Tile Cleaner which is a pH neutral cleaner that won’t harm the sealer.
