Putting the Shine Back on Marble Flooring with Tile Doctor Burnishing Pads in Girvan Ayrshire
Recently, I had the opportunity to restore a 100-year-old Marble tiled porch at a property in the harbour town of Girvan. The Marble floor was in excellent physical condition for its age but constant use had left it dull and marked in places. It now needed some TLC to bring back its original elegance.

Deep Cleaning and Honing Marble Tiled Porch
Work began with deep cleaning the Marble to remove built-up dirt and surface contaminants. For this we use a set of diamond burnishing pads of increasing grits starting with a coarse 400 and finishing with a very fine 3500.
The burnishing pads are applied to the floor using a weighted rotary floor machine running at slow speed. The coarse 400-grit pad that is applied with water and removes sealers, old polish and dirt. The water quickly turns into a slurry and once the whole floor had been burnished in this way the soiling is removed with more water and a wet vacuum.
The next pad is a finer 800-grit which is the first step in re-polishing the Marble and slowly bring the stone back to life. The process was then repeated with a 1500-grit pad, then rinsing and extracting after each pad as before. The last pad is an extra fine 3,500-grit pad that pad brings up the polish on the floor even further and is applied using a small amount of water sprayed onto the surface.
This process removed slowly scratches, etching, and any dull patches enriching the Marbles depth and colour and revealing the stones natural beauty.
Sealing a Marble Tiled Porch
To protect and enhance the stone a couple of coats of Tile Doctor Colour Grow sealer was applied. This provides long-lasting protection and the colour enhancing formula enriches the marble’s depth and colour helping to bring out the contrast in the Black and White tiles. Colour Grow also allows for moisture transmission which is an important consideration when sealing tiles that were laid before the invention of the damp proof membrane.
The result was a beautifully restored, polished Marble porch with a durable, stain-resistant finish. This stunning entrance is back to its former glory, and with proper maintenance, it will stay looking pristine for years to come!

Regarding maintenance, I like to recommend Tile Doctor Stone Soap for the regular cleaning of sealed and polished stone floors. It’s a mild product yet effective cleaner that won’t impact the sealer, it also contains a patina enhancer that will help to maintain the deep shine on Marble.
